Appendix 1: Letters, Resolutions and Presentations

Mayor Can. Francesco Aloisio the bear known in my childhood years. I remember his physical figure, when, now advanced in the end, with the tenacity of the man who had dedicated his existence to the service of the community, I continued to the exhaustion of his energies the pastoral activity of priest of the church of the patron St. Anthony. It’s greatness of study value, the love for his country we have given this unique, precious work, remaining copies of it, the city council has reprinted with the certainty of interpreting a common desire.

The peak slopes of Mount Elimo was destroyed by the earthquakes of 1968, but abandoned at a distance of several years , despite the wounded plants, in maintaining its urban configuration so much that a passenger watching from a distance will never think of a land-motive country. Being able to retrace it’s streets or the square, perhaps looking for a distant memory becomes more and more dangerous. Perhaps he would have created an intervention aimed at the consolidation of these ruins and therefore he intends to gradually erase what was remained, the History of Poggioreale, but lived and built by the inhabitants of Treviso.

After the earthquake, about twenty years of history suffered. I remembered the first dreadful moments when with the intervention of the army the population and state transfused into diverse location, the the concentration attempt that was supposed to come together in the tent city for the occasion set up in the Alcamo sports field. Meanwhile free travel was offered to expatriate and so the population was halved. After a year, the transfer to the slum made in contrada Donna Rosa, adjacent to the destroyed town. The long years of slum have still materialized and continued the tragedy of the earthquake. So about eighteen years that, in my opinion, represents a period, a circumscribed chapter characterized by the many problems that were intrinsic to the new condition in which we were forced.

Finally the reconstruction of the aisle. Today Poggioreale rises in the Mandria di Mezzo area at an altitude of about 200 meters s.l.m on a slope that ends in the plain where the two branches of Betice meet, right and left, forming a single branch. It covers an area of about 60 hectares and six hundred houses were built for a population of 2,000 inhabitants. The reconstruction of the houses represented a moment of redemption, of the affirmation of a new identity that feels the need to reconnect to those roots of a past that the land has tried to cancel.

In this new moment of identification, in which the present seeks the past to look to the future, this Opera ranks as an irreplaceable guide.

The rediscovery of the great workings of this population which, gritting its teeth against all sorts of adversities, has tried to maintain the last roots in this land, giving a glimpse of a new hope for growth.

After Elima and Betik the Star of Poggioreale will continue to shine if we can gather the message of Can. Aloisio, “the strength of a country and in work, in culture, in virtue, in the honesty of its children.”

On the report of the President:

Given that in 1956 on behalf of the municipal administration written by the canon Francesco Aloisio, the story of Poggioreale, Published in a volume of over 300 pages, with photographs of the most remarkable monuments of the urban center.

Since the population of the municipality of Poggioreale, following the aforementioned seismic events of January 1968, he suddenly had to abandon the inhabited center and now lives in a new urban reconstructed tunnel in the first at about five kilometers.

Considering that in the old urban center there are not only residences, the public buildings that still stand splendid in the natural silence that surrounds them. the most sincere and spontaneous of the poggiorealesi who were born there, that carefree children chased each other through his straight ways, that adults savored the pleasure of a chat sitting in the shade of the houses, while the smell of hay and straw even permeated the moss born between the ancient walls. Noting that it is not uncommon to surprise some citizens by looking upwards, looking at the old town suddenly they are saddened and continue to walk with their heads bowed as if they are afraid to see their beloved country again. Perhaps because with that view he sees one two many moments lived between those walls, between those streets and the memory becomes sadness, poignant melancholy, believed that the reprinting of the History of Poggioreale, being able to read, being able to see again even if only in fotografia, the churches, the streets, Piazza Elimo, from the top of the Mother Church. Countless times trampled by the bare feet of our women happy to dissolve a vote in the annual procession for the feast of St. Anthony. The canoli source, where all the families of Poggioreale went for centuries to draw water. since the urban water network was a conquest not of distant memory may not only constitute a remarkable cultural event for the people of Pogetto, but to be a comfort to the old citizens and to help the young generations that they did not breathe the charm of the cool and warm stone-walled houses, of shaded streets, of the exchange of words with their friend, but only dust and cement to understand the popping of a few tears on the wrinkled face of the grandparents, to love also those that today are ruins but that life was life.
